Together | Feat. Joel Smallbone
I had a friend who was really into quantum physics. We would binge documentaries until the early am hours and then talk about it for hours more. By now, I should understand it a lot more than I actually do. LOL! The one thing that stuck with me, though, is this concept that everything is connected. Every particle in the universe is connected in many different ways…some obvious, some subtle, and some still to be discovered. It’s fascinating.
If every particle in the universe is connected, then we are designed to connect with each other.
That’s probably why the isolation of the pandemic has been unexpectedly hard for most people. To be divided, separated, and isolated is not our natural state. Maybe that’s a partial explanation for the level of anxiety and anger in our society right now….
and maybe more connection is how we fix it.
My connection with Joel and Luke Smallbone, of For King & Country, goes back to a New Year’s Eve show over 20 years ago. Their big sister, Rebecca, was ringing in Y2K with a show at Knott’s Berry Farm and I was the emcee. I don’t think we even officially met. They were busy eating dinner backstage with their family, while I awaited stage instructions from Rebecca’s manager, their dad. I remember thinking how nice it was for them to get to travel the world as a family. It makes perfect sense that Joel and Luke would grow up and continue to do so with their own band. It also makes perfect sense that they would have written a song about the power of unity and choosing to stay connected, when everything in our world tries to separate us.
